MANILA, Philippines – The Bureau of Customs (BOC) seized three 40-foot container vans loaded with smuggled onions misdeclared as ceramic products from China.
“We discovered that behind the two layers of declared ceramic wares, there were boxes of onions concealed occupying the entire back portion of the container,” described Customs Commissioner Isidro Lapeña.
The smuggled onions, valued at P4.5 million, were consigned under the name Precious Prince Enterprises based in Parañaque City. The Customs Chief said they are inclined to file charges against the broker and the importer.
“Appropriate charges will be filed against the importer and customs broker while their accreditation with the Bureau of Customs will be suspended or revoked immediately,” he said.
The smuggled items will be destroyed by the agency later this week. Based on BOC’s records, the agency already intercepted nearly P84 million pesos worth of smuggled goods this year at the Port of Manila alone. – Nel Maribojoc / Marje Pelayo
