QUEZON CITY, Philippines – The Philippine National Police (PNP) Highway Patrol Group (HPG) is now preparing for their come back on major thoroughfares on EDSA.

According to HPG Director PCSupt. Roberto Fajardo, they are now coordinating with the Land Transportation Office (LTO) Chief Edgar Galvante for their return in manning the traffic situation on one of the busiest highways in Metro Manila.

Fajardo noted that the number of vehicles plying the roads of EDSA has now doubled its capacity of 140,000. EDSA is now holding over 360,000 vehicles every day.

According to a study conducted by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA,) the country’s economy is losing up to P2.4 billion a day due to heavy traffic.

This is the reason why Fajardo wants to assist the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) in managing traffic situation in EDSA and to help in the strict enforcement of traffic regulations as well as in apprehension of offenders.

“Ang HPG ay may coordination sa LTO sa violations sa mga sasakyan, traffic. I reported to Asec. Galvante, nag-usap kami. Talagang kailangan namin iyong deputization para makatulong kami to ease up the traffic. Pati iyong mga nababangga, we will see to it na parehas naming titiketan yun to serve as a lesson na pag nabangga ka ibig sabihin ay reckless ka,” Fajardo said.

(The HPG has coordination with LTO when it comes to traffic violations. I reported to Asec. Galvante and we had a talk. We really need deputization to help ease up traffic. In car accidents,  we will see to it that both parties get a ticket to serve as a lesson on reckless driving.)

Fajardo added that they will select the most able men to be deployed on EDSA who will undergo training.

“We will conduct first seminar, may exam pa yun. Di basta basta i-issue yung deputization ng LTO. You have to undergo seminar,” said Fajardo.

(We will conduct a seminar first  and then give an exam. We won’t just issue an LTO deputization. You have to undergo seminar.)
