QUEZON CITY, Philippines – The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) is still validating reports of the death of Abu Dar, the current leader of the Maute –ISIS terror group, in a pursuit operation of the military in Lanao Del Sur.
According to AFP Spokesperson Marine Col. Edgard Arevalo, Abu Dar was the main subject of the operation that was launched on Sunday morning, June 17, in a pursuit against Maute-ISIS members who escaped the war in Marawi.
Arevalo said Abu Dar acted as the head of the terror group since the death of Isnilon Hapilon. He said the AFP received an information of Abu Dar’s sightings in Lanao Del Sur and so the operation.
On Monday, Joint Task Force Ranao Deputy Commander Romeo Brawner reported that five terrorists were killed in the first launch of the operation in the mountains of Tubaran and Pagayawan in Lanao Del Sur.
The AFP is currently in hot pursuit of the 40 Maute-ISIS terrorists under Abu Dar’s command who were believed to have escaped the Marawi siege. – Lea Ylagan | Marje Pelayo
