MANILA, Philippines – President Rodrigo Duterte remains unapologetic despite calls for him to “repent” for attacking the Catholic church.
During the oath-taking of barangay officials in Cagayan de Oro on Monday (June 25), Duterte maintained that he has the freedom to choose his own belief just like anyone else, adding that his God is different from that of his critics.
Sabi ko, ‘Your god, is not my god because your god is stupid’…Mine has a lot of common sense.’ Tapos ngayon, why do you have to talk about religion?” he added.
(I never said that my God is a wimp. What I said was, “Your god, is not my god because your god is stupid’…Mine has a lot of common sense.” And now, why do you have to talk about religion?)
Duterte explained that his previous rant stemmed from his outrage over Australian Missionary Patricia Fox for criticizing his administration.
He drew the ire of critics by hitting the Catholic church’s doctrine on original sin and calling the Catholic god “stupid,”
“Ikaw maniwala ka noong sinasabi ng Katokiko? Who is this stupid god?…You created something perfect and then you think of an event that would tempt and destroy the quality of your work? So tayo ngayon, all of us are born with an original sin? Ang original sin, ano man yan? Was it first kiss? O, what was the sin? Bakit original? Duterte said in a speech on June 22 in Davao City.
(Do you believe what the Catholics are saying? Who is this stupid god?…You created something perfect and then you think of an event that would tempt and destroy the quality of your work? So now, all of us are born with an original sin? What is the original sin? Was it first kiss? What was the sin?Why is it original? You already have sinned while in the womb?)
As expected, critics vented out their disgust against Duterte on social media.
Senator Antonio Trillanes IV in a post on Twitter called Duterte’s remarks as “disrespect and spit on an individual’s faith” and told Duterte to “prepare for the wrath.”
Lawyer Mel Sta. Maria ride into the word war saying “If I am stupid for my belief, then I am proud to be stupid,” in response to Duterte’s stupidity attack.
One netizen addressed Duterte as “a living embodiment of atheist.”
Tele-evangelist Brother Eli Soriano meanwhile, explained the Bible’s account on the story of Adam and Eve from which, Brother Eli said, the Catholic invented the concept of original sin.
Unang-unang pagkapanganak, walang asawa, paanong makapakinig walang asawa. Original sin, imbento ‘yan,” Soriano said in one of his Bible expositions.
