An unidentified motorcycle rider died on the spot after encountering a police team at the port area of the Baseco Compound in Manila, Wednesday (August 8) at dawn.
Authorities said the rider refused to stop at a checkpoint where police and personnel of Barangay 649 were conducting an anti-criminality operation.
The police gave chase and exchanged fire with the man until he died from multiple gunshot wounds.
One of the policemen, PO1 Gerardo Salustiano, also sustained a gunshot wound on his left arm and was promptly brought to the hospital.
“Mayroon pong isang umiwas po sa checkpoint, tapos po, hinabol po namin ni Major Sabulao. Tapos pagdating po dito, bigla po kaming pinaputukan, tinamaan po ako. Doon pa lang po kami gumanti ng putok (Someone tried to avoid the checkpoint so Major Sabulao and I chased him. He suddenly fired at us, hitting me; that’s when we fired back),” Salustiano said.
Police recovered from the suspect a .38 caliber gun with four bullets; a black body bag containing P200; and three sachets of suspected shabu.
Initial investigation revealed that the rider was also one of the suspects in a recent shooting in the area the previous night based on the motorcycle he was riding which was identical to the one used in the ambush.
