Sacks of smuggled sugar
MANILA, Philippines — Bureau of Customs (BOC) confiscated over P39-million worth of sugar that were found inside 45 abandoned 20-ft containers at the port of Manila.
The shipment, consigned to Red Star Rising Corporation, arrived from Thailand in separate dates from June to July.
It was declared to contain packaging materials, kitchen utensils and kraft paper. But Customs operatives found over 22,000 sacks of sugar inside the containers upon inspection.
“While this particular shipment was still in transit, I have already instructed the district collector to put the containers on hold and issue a necessary alert order,” Customs chief Isidro Lapeña said.
The BOC immediately revoked the accreditation of its importer for violating the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act and the joint memorandum on securing import permit from the sugar regulatory administration.
“Due to our heightened drive against all forms of fraud against the Bureau of Customs, they know it’s very difficult to pass through our stringent processes. Perhaps, this is why the importer did not file an entry and choose to abandon the shipment by letting the period lapse,” said Lapeña. — Rey Pelayo | UNTV News & Rescue
