RIZAL, Philippines – Quarrying and crushing plant operations in San Mateo and Rodriguez (formerly Montalban) in Rizal are now temporarily suspended.

In a memorandum issued by Calabarzon DENR-Mines and Geosciences Bureau on Tuesday (August 14), Regional Director Samuel Paragas said the suspension was in view of the excessive flooding in low-lying areas in the subject municipalities, especially those adjacent to Marikina-Wawa River.

The flooding submerged several barangays in Rodriguez and San Mateo prompting the local government to declare a state of calamity.

The suspension came after Special Assistant to the President (SAP) Christopher “Bong” Go called the attention of Environment Secretary Roy Cimatu regarding the concerns of residents in Marikina City during a visit on Monday on the possible links of quarrying activities to severe flooding in their municipalities.

The order which took effect “immediately” upon release shall remain in force, according to the memorandum, “until an assessment is completed” on the potential role of quarrying to the flooding in the said areas. – Jenica Cruz / Marje Pelayo
