QUEZON CITY, Philippines – The weather bureau PAGASA said they have been issuing advisory since Friday of possible water spillage in major dams in Luzon following days of non-stop monsoon rains.

The agency cited as an example Angat Dam which supplies water for domestic use in Metro Manila, Pampanga and Bulacan.

As of 6:00 a.m. today (August 14), the water level in Angat Dam reached 204.81 meters, an increase by 23 meters more than its normal level, according to PAGASA Senior Weather Specialist Danny Flores.

Angat’s spilling level is at 215 meters.

Other dams in Luzon were compelled to release water to prevent damage such as Magat Dam which recently opened its gates by two meters. This affects municipalities of Ramon, San Mateo, Luna, Aurora, Burgos, Gamu and Naguilian in Cagayan.

San Roque Dam in Pangasinan recently opened five gates to facilitate spillage from Ambuklao and Binga Dams. This affects the towns of San Nicolas, San Manuel, Asingan, Tayug, Santa Maria, Villasis, Bautista, Rosales, Bayambang and San Manuel in Pangasinan.

“Ang San Roque nagpapakawala din, 5 meters ang open pero controlled ito,” explained Flores.

Other dams being monitored by the agency include Pantabangan Dam in Nueva Ecija and Calariya Dam in Laguna. – Rey Pelayo / Marje Pelayo
