CEBU, Philippines – The United Kingdom (UK) recently advised its nationals to defer any travels to Mindanao, Sulu, and southern Cebu.
The advisory released on Tuesday (August 14) said the UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advises against all travel to the country’s southern region because of terrorist activity and clashes between the military and insurgent groups.
The FCO specifically noted travels to western and central Mindanao, the Sulu archipelago and the south of Cebu province, up to and including the municipalities of Dalaguete and Badian.
Following this, the Cebu Police Provincial Office (CPPO) raised its security alert status by intensifying police visibility and close coordination with other law enforcement agencies as a precautionary measure.
But police authorities stressed that there is no reason to panic. According to PSupt. Janette Rafter, Chief of Police Provincial Investigation and Detective Management Branch (PIDMB) in Cebu, they have not received any information regarding any threat or any kind of threat particularly in the said areas or in Cebu in general.
“I would encourage still the people who are going to that area to still enjoy the great experience the Southern Part of Cebu is offering. (Jump to) Rest assured that the PNP in general, not just the CPPO but the PRO-7 Is assuring all of your safety,” she said.
Still, the Philippine National Police (PNP) advises the public in Cebu to remain vigilant and report any sightings of suspicious individual or activity in the area. – Gladys Toabi / Marje Pelayo
