The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) has issued a show cause order against 16 mayors who were allegedly “missing in action” while Typhoon Ompong was pummeling their respective areas of jurisdiction.
Nine of the officials are from Region 2 while seven are from the Cordillera Administrative Region.
They were given five days to inform the agency about the measures they have undertaken with regard to the recent calamity that affected their areas.
The DILG reiterated that before the onslaught of Typhoon Ompong, all mayors were directed to be physically present in their localities and to ensure the prompt response of the government on the effects of the calamity.
DILG Spokesperson Asec. Jonathan Malayay explained that an elected official may be suspended or removed from post on the following grounds: gross negligence; dereliction of duties and misconduct in office.
Under the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Act of 2010, the local chief executive is also the head of the Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.
