MANDALUYONG CITY, Philippines – Two maintenance service vehicles of the MRT Line 3 collided at early dawn Wednesday (September 26).
The collision injured seven of MRT-3’s maintenance personnel – two of them still under observation at an intensive care unit (ICU) in Victor R. Potenciano Medical Center in Mandaluyong City.
One of the drivers was already discharged from the hospital for minor injuries but the rest are still recovering.
According to Engineer Michael Capati, the driver of the second unit did not notice the first unit still parked ahead as he was blinded by the curve between Buendia and Guadalupe stations.
“Since paahon at palusong po iyan, kurbado po medyo hindi masydong makikita iyong nasa unahan. Nang makita ng driver natin prumeno siya. Unfortunately po kumapit man ang preno sa tindi ng bigat ng unimog at tsaka nung kanyang daladala sa likod ay di na kinayang mag-preno bago sumalpok duon sa isang unimog,” explained Capati, MRT-3’s Director for Operations.

Most of the victims sustained bone fractures and multiple wounds in different parts of their bodies.
The MRT-3 management assured to shoulder all the medical expenses of the injured personnel.
Engr. Capati admitted there were lapses in communication between the two teams, thus, the mishap.
“I think there was a lapse in the safety protocol. Kulang ng komunikasyon between duon po sa driver ng tracks na siya po ay on the way na pabalik. Since nagkaroon ng communication lapse hindi niya po nalaman na meron pang gumagawa,” he explained.
The MRT management vowed to look into and revise its safety protocols to prevent a repeat of the incident. – Marje Pelayo (with reports from Joan Nano)
