Anti-Duterte protest

MANILA, Philippines —House Makabayan lawmakers admit they will be mounting a massive rally next month, but denied that it has to do with alleged plots to overthrow the Duterte administration.

The group maintained that the planned demonstration is aimed at raising their sentiments to the government.

“Hindi ito destabilization plot. Ito ay lihitimong pagkilos ng mga maggagawang bukid sa mga aksyon nakaaapekto sa kanila,” said Anakpawis party-list Rep. Ariel Casilao.

ACT Teachers paty-list Rep. France Castro added that,”Sa bahagi ng mga kaguruan sa September 5- October 5, yan ang Teacher’s Month, maraming serye [ng pagkilos] na hinanda ang kaguruan.”

“What is on the red now, very clearly in the past days, our economy is on the red,” said Bayan Muna party-list Rep. Carlos Zarate.

The statement comes after the military claimed that the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) and their co-conspirators have lined up several events that would culminate in President Rodrigo Duterte’s ouster, based on recovered documents.

The Makabayan group, however, denies any involvement in the matter and that they are not communicating with the communist party and other political groups.

“There was never an ‘us’ between LP, Magdalo and the Left. What we have in common is our protest against tyranny, economic crisis, and our alternatives,” said Casilao.

In view of the alleged ‘Red October’ plot, the Makabayan solons deferred the deliberation on the proposed budget of the National Security Council and Military Intelligence Cops Association in the belief that these agencies are just using their fund to gather wrong intelligence data.

House Speaker Gloria Arroyo, meanwhile, defended President Duterte’s pronouncements against groups plotting his ouster.

Arroyo, speaking from experience as a former president, said a chief executive has access to intelligence reports that are not available to all.

“If the president believes that there is a threat he is working from good information so we should believe whatever,” said Arroyo. — Grace Casin
