MANILA, Philippines — For the first time in the coming May 13 midterm elections, the Commission on Election (Comelec) will use the voter verification system (VVS).
The poll body will use VVS machines to verify if a person is a legitimate voter.
The machine will scan the voter’s fingerprint to make sure that the person is a registered voter at a particular voting precinct.
The Comelec said such system will prevent flying voters on the day of the election.
“Basically, this is your fingerprint scanner. So you can your fingerprint … and your information will show up on this screen. Ito iyong katumbas nung ating boook of voters, iyong election day computerized voters’ list. It will be in here,” said Comelec director James Jimenez.
The Comelec will deploy 37,000 VVS machines in the entire National Capital Region (NCR) and in other areas of Luzon for the pilot testing of said system.
“This unit will have the voter information of all the voters assigned to the precinct associated with the unit. Ito ay naka- assign sa precinct 32A of (let’s say) Manila, then only the voters of 32A in Manila will be in the memory of this device,” the director explained.
Jimenez clarified, however, that there will be the computerized voters’ list on the day of the election. This list will be for the use of the board of election tellers in case they encounter problems with the VVS.
“This comes with a printer, with a bluetooh thermal printer and it will print a receipt for the voter and pwedeng ibigay ang receipt na iyon doon sa ating electoral board basically proof na sya ay na- verfiy na,“ Jimenez said. – Marje Pelayo (with reports from Aiko Miguel)
