The Department of Transportation (DOTr) will transfer general aviation flights once the Danilo Atienza Air Base or Sangley Airport rehabilitation in Cavite is finished and becomes operational.
According to DOTr Undersecretary for aviation Manuel Tamayo, the department allocated a budget of around P500 million. They have also finished extending the runway up to 2,300 meters last January.
“We have a budget of P500 million for the Danilo Atienza Air Base… If you recall, matagal nang hindi name-maintain masyado [it hasn’t been maintained for quite a while]. The runway was shortened to 1,200 meters only. Now, I’m happy to tell you, it is back to 2,300 meters. Tapos na [It’s finished],” he said.
The transportation department aims for the airport to become operational within a year. The said transfer will help lessen air traffic congestion at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).
After the runway extension, Tamayo said the department is proceeding to build hangars and a passenger terminal building.
“Now what we are constructing are the hangars and the passenger terminal building. We’ll be setting up a new tower and that will be developed to be night rated as well,” he added.—Aileen Cerrudo
