The Department of Trade and Industry has conducted inspections on the price of commodities in several markets and supermarkets in Manila.
The DTI found out that while there were no price adjustments in most of the products in the supermarkets and several market stall, chickens and sugar are sold higher than the suggested retail price (SRP).
One supermarket was selling white sugar at P57 per kilo and brown sugar at P49.50 per kilo.
Based on SRP, white sugar should be sold at P50 per kilo, while brown sugar should be priced at P45 per kilo.
DTI Undersecretary for Consumer Protection Ruth Castelo warned the management of the said supermarket to correct the pricing of the said products. Failure to do so will warrant an issuance of a notice of violation.
Meanwhile, the price of pork products remains at P210 to P230 per kilo. There was also no significant movement in the price of vegetables in Manila markets.
Fish, such as tilapia, bangus and galunggong are sold from P100 to P140 per kilo.
The National Price Coordinating Council is expected to announce price adjustment on several products on Wednesday (April 10).
The council has invited the Department of Agriculture and PAGASA to discuss the possible effects of the worsening El Nino phenomenon on the price of commodities.
The DTI has received reports of stunted growth of vegetables and poultry products in some provinces due to the severe heat brought about by El Nino.
“So far wala pa tayong nakikita dahil stable pa ang presyo ng agri products. We will come up with measures kung papaano natin ia-adress yung impact ng el nino para mabawasan yung epekto sa consumers [So far we haven’t seen (any effects) yet as prices of agri products are still stable. We will come up with measures on how to address the impact of El Nino on consumers],“ Castelo said. – Maris Federez (with reports from Joan Nano)
