Tax payers file their ITRs at the last minute before the deadline

The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) reminds taxpayers that there will be no extension of the April 15 deadline for the filing of 2018 Income Tax Returns (ITR).

The BIR made the reminder on Friday (April 12) following observation that only a small number of taxpayers have made the effort of filing their ITRs ahead of the deadline at revenue offices across the country.

The agency said the process of ITR filing is easier compared to before as taxpayers can now pay their dues and submit tax returns online through the electronic filing and payment system (eFPS).

eFPS is a system introduced and maintained by the BIR in line with the government’s policy of providing fast and convenient way of transacting with government offices. This system allows taxpayers to avail of a paperless tax filing as long as they have an e-mail account and internet access and are registered in the BIR Integrated Tax System.

For those who are yet to enroll in the eFPS, they must coordinate with their revenue district office (RDO) by submitting a letter of intent.

To file ITRs online, taxpayers need to visit the BIR website, and click the electronic services (e-services) and eFPS icon.

Log in the credentials required in the form then click the ‘enroll to e-FPS’ link for the enrollment form to appear. Complete the required fields and then hit the “submit” button.

For non-individual users, they must submit a certificate authorizing up to three (3) officers designated to file a return.

Taxpayers enrolling in the eFPS are reminded to indicate a valid email address where the system will send the verification code to be supplied in the next portion of the enrollment form.

After submitting the form, BIR will send an email to the taxpayer informing them if the enrollment was successful or not.

If the enrollment form was accepted, the BIR will send a notification via email after the record has been processed. The notification status from the BIR should be printed and submitted to the respective revenue district office (RDO) that has the jurisdiction for the account activation, along with the necessary documents.

When the account is activated, taxpayers may start e-filing their ITRs provided that they maintain an online banking facility with any authorized agent bank where they intend to pay through the bank debit system.

“Kung wala naman pong attachment, mas mabilis kasi hindi na po sila pipila pa para magpunta sa mga district na sakop nuong kanilang pinapareceive. Kapag mayroon naman siyang attachment, ‘yung kanilang ITR, tapos naka-online, ire-receive po namin sa aming opisina,” said Maria Rica Marcoso, Administrative Assistant I of BIR RDO 39 South Quezon City.

For those who can’t use eFPS, they may still file their returns online by downloading and installing the mobile application “eBIR form packages.”

Fill out the correct and new version of BIR form for filing of annual ITR: form 1700 for individuals who are engaged in trade/business or the practice of profession; form 1701 for mixed income earners; 1701a for self-employed and professionals; 1702-EX for corporations, partnership and other non-individual taxpayers exempt under Tax Code;

1702-MX for corporations, partnership and other non-individual with mixed income subject to multiple income tax rates or with income subject to special/preferential rate; and, form 1702-RT for corporations, partnership and other non-individual taxpayers subject only to regular income tax rate.

After supplying the required fields, click validate and final copy buttons to file their ITR online. They must check their email for the confirmation status from the BIR.

Print the return and email confirmation then proceed to pay in a banking facility with any authorized agent bank, be it online or other mobile modes indicated by the BIR.

For taxpayers who are not tech-savvy, they may visit their respective RDO to manually file their ITRs.

The agency warned taxpayers that a 25 percent surcharge and 12 percent interest per annum will be charged if they failed to file the ITR on time.

“Sana huwag na po ninyong paabutin pa na lumagpas pa tayo sa deadline para hindi na po kayo maabala o mag-penalty, sayang din po ang penalty,” Marcoso said.

BIR will open its offices on Saturday to receive ITRs.

The agency targets to collect more than P2-trillion in revenue this year. – Robie de Guzman (with details from Nel Maribojoc)
