MANILA, Philippines – The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) on Saturday issued another yellow alert notice for the Luzon grid following a series of rotational brownouts experienced in some areas on Friday.

In an advisory, the yellow alert is up for more than 10 hours, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday. Yellow alert means that low power reserves against high power demand.

The NGCP issued the second highest alert after Luzon grid on Friday was placed on red alert, which resulted in the implementation of rotational brownouts in Metro Manila and nearby provinces. It was the first time it happened after the grid was alternately placed under yellow and red alerts for consecutive days.

According to NGCP, the currently available capacity is at 10,326 megawatts (MW) while the peak demand is at 9,933 MW. This means the power reserve is only at 393MW, which is lower than the required 647MW contingency in Luzon.

Luzon grid has been experiencing a drop in power supply reserves due to unplanned outages of several power plants.

However, the Department of Energy assured there is no looming or ongoing power crisis in the country.

DOE Undersecretary Felix William Fuentebella told media last week that the potential causes of the current energy problems and its remedies have been identified.

The Energy official also hopes that the power supply in Luzon grid will stabilize in the coming days as some currently offline power plants will resume operations this week. – Robie de Guzman
