The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) denies being anti-Filipino for not requiring Filipino and Pantikian as core subjects in college.

In a press statement on Wednesday (May 29), CHED clarified that their Memorandum Order no. 20, series of 2013 will only transfer Filipino and Pantikan to the senior high school level.

According to CHED Chairman Prospero E. De Vera III, these subjects are important building blocks for preparing senior high students to be university-ready when they graduate.

“The accusation of critics that CHED is anti-Filipino is wrong. The Commission believes in the fundamental role played by language in education. To be properly cultivated, Filipino cannot merely be taught as a subject, but must be used in oral and written forms, across academic domains,” De Vera said.

Meanwhile, the Alyansa ng mga Tagapagtanggol ng Wikang Filipino (Tanggol Wika) is considering filing a second motion for reconsideration after the Supreme Court upheld its decision in favor of CHED’s Memoradum 20.
