The Magnitude 5.5 earthquake that hit Surigao del Sur on Saturday (July 13) morning left the province with only manageable damage.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the earthquake, recorded at 4:42 a.m., was tectonic in origin and had a depth of 5 kilometers with its epicenter 9 kilometers southeast of Carrascal town. Phivolcs initially reported that the epicenter was 8 kilometers Northwest of Cortes town.
Office of Civil Defense (OCD) Regional Director Liza Mazo said, based on the report of the Surigao del Sur PDRRMO, the walls of Agsam Catholic church in the town of Lanuza were damaged, and the ceiling and roofing of Carmen Parish Church in the municipality of Carmen had collapsed.
The municipal hall and the public market in Carmen also sustained cracks.
Old and new public and private buildings, bridges, business establishments, and houses in the towns of Lanuza, Carmen, Madrid and Catillan were also damaged.
As of 6 am on Saturday, 25 individuals with minor injuries were treated at the Madrid District Hospital; while three patients were referred to Adela Serra Ty Memorial Medical Center in Tandag Municipality for further check up.
