QUEZON CITY, Philippines — Taguig City Representative Alan Peter Cayateno on Monday (July 22) expressed confidence that he will be elected as House Speaker, hours before the formal opening of the 18th Congress.
Cayetano said his meeting with Davao Representative Paulo Duterte on Sunday has been smooth and that the neophyte congressman accepted the position of deputy speaker for political affairs.
“More on the deputy speaker for political affairs, that in the next few days kailabgan naming ayusin yung mga committees,” Cayetano said.
“Basically smooth na parang more on work ang aming pinag-uusapan,” he added.
About rumors of a possible coup at the Lower House, Cayetano said he does not want to speak ahead of the lawmakers’ decision, but he assured to reach out to his colleagues to gain their trust.
“It’s always good to be on guard, it’s a democracy. Meaning, anyone can suddenly say, ‘tatakbo ako’. I think we formed a consensus,” he said.
“But what I can say is, we are all excited to hear the SONA (state of the nation address). I expect the President to pound on several problems, like drugs and corruption, but some new items where I think puwedeng kilusan kaagad at ma-solve kaagad, he concluded. — mnp
