MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Coast Guard on Thursday acquired new assets to enhance its disaster response, maritime security and patrol operations.
The newly-procured assets include 73 rubber boats with outboard motor, 90 units of 4×4 pick-up with trailer hitch ball and mount, seven bus units, as well as five fully-equipped ambulances.
Also included were 12 units of seven-meter rigid hull inflatable boats (RHIB), which will function in patrol and interception tasks, transport of crew and equipment, rescue operations, and diving support.
Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana and Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade led the turnover ceremony of the newly-acquired assets.
“I am happy to witness developments that are significant, especially those with the mandate that intersects the DND. As stewards of these assets, let us utilize these properly in service to the Filipinos. Take care of these assets to safeguard the lives of our people,” Lorenzana said.
The defense chief also expressed support for the establishment of the Coast Guard Academy and its K9 unit.
Tugade, meanwhile, noted the Duterte administration’s efforts to enhance and modernize PCG’s capability.
“‘Yung pagbibigay ng equipment na gagamitin sa pagtanggol ng ating kapaligiran at karagatan. Ito ang simbolo na gusto ng ating Pangulo,” Tugade said.
The PCG said these assets would allow the agency to extend better service to the public especially during times of disaster; and fulfill its mandate in search, rescue and response operations.
“It is our primordial duty to always be ready to respond to calamities, distress calls, and save lives. We are grateful to President Rodrigo Roa Duterte and Secretary Tugade for all the support in the capability development of the PCG. The Filipino people can count on the PCG, as we will always be in service for our nation,” said PCG Commandant Admiral Elson Hermogino.
The new assets are set to be deployed to 12 PCG districts across the country.
