SUBIC BAY FREEPORT – The North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) Corporation is set to start the construction of the P1.6 billion Subic Freeport Expressway (SFEX) capacity expansion project after a groundbreaking ceremony held on Thursday (Sept. 12).
NLEX Corporation President and General Manager Luigi Bautista said the project is aimed at promoting traffic safety and easing travel time to and from the Subic Bay Freeport.
“By increasing the road capacity of SFEX, which traverses the provinces of Bataan and Zambales, the transport of goods in and out of the Subic Freeport would be faster and easier,” Bautista said.
The SFEX capacity expansion project includes the construction of two additional lanes, two bridges at Jadjad and Argonaut and a two-lane tunnel parallel to the existing tunnel.
Also included in the project are the installation of expressway-standard LED lights to improve motorists’ visibility at night and the raising of Maritan-Highway-Rizal Highway-Tipo Road junction which is usually waterlogged during rainy days.
“One of the key drivers of economic growth is the network of high-quality roads. The NLEX Corp., through NLEX and SCTEX, and the soon- to-expanded SFEX not only intends to accelerate development but also hopes to encourage travel convenience and road safety,” Bautista said in a separate statement.
The 8.2-kilometer SFEX, also known as Subic-Tipo Expressway or NLEX Segment 7, links Subic Bay Freeport and the 94-kilometer Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway.
The project, expected to be completed next year, is seen to enhance accessibility and promote travel efficiency on the key road that connects Bataan and Zambales.
It is also expected to boost Subic’s competitiveness in trade and tourism industries. – RRD (with details from Correspondent Leslie Huidem)
