MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine government is temporarily banning entry of foreign travelers from the United States due to the threat of the new variant of novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), Malacañang announced on Friday.
Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said the travel ban will be from 12:01 a.m. of January 3 until January 15.
The United States is the 21st country to be included in the Philippines’ travel ban list.
Foreign passengers coming from or who have been in the US within 14 days immediately preceding arrival in the country shall not be allowed to enter starting January 3.
Foreign travelers from the US who arrived before Sunday shall be allowed to enter the Philippines but will be required to undergo a mandatory 14-day quarantine period regardless of their RT-PCR test result.
Roque also said that Filipinos coming from the US within 14 days will be allowed to return to the country but will also be required to complete the 14-day quarantine period.
The announcement comes after the US confirmed its first case of a new COVID-19 variant that was first detected in the United Kingdom. – RRD (with details from Correspondent Rosalie Coz)
