MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) said it is prepared to assist in the pilot testing of the granular lockdown in Metro Manila which will begin on September 8.

PNP chief Police General Guillermo Eleazar said he had given instructions to all police commanders in Metro Manila to coordinate with local government units (LGUs) regarding its enforcement to ensure the smooth flow of its implementation.

Based on the PNP data, there are 51 areas in Metro Manila that are currently under granular lockdown.

Eleazar said this is the national government’s solution to balance the reopening of the economy and the spread of coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

“I urge the public to cooperate with measures and regulations that the government is imposing to stop the surge in COVID-19 cases. Kung hindi man para sa ating sarili ay sumunod tayo sa mga public health safety at quarantine protocols para sa kaligtasan at kalusugan ng ating mga mahal sa buhay (If not for ourselves, let us follow the public health safety and quarantine protocols for the safety and health of our loved ones),” he said.

On Monday (September 6), the national government announced that Metro Manila will be under general community quarantine (GCQ) from September 8 to 30.

The guidelines for the granular lockdown, meanwhile, still await the result of the review and approval of the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases.  AAC
