QUEZON CITY, Philippines — The Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) has completed it’s new Geohazard map.

The new map shows clearer images of areas in the locality which are vulnerable to floods and landslides. It is more precise compared to the older Geohazard map, given its scale of 1:10,000.

A special 3D feature is also incorporated in the map which enables better viewing of the rivers and mountains surrounding each locality.

MGB Director Leo Jasareno said, “Kita mo agad sa sitio mo anong hazard meron ka so makikita mo doon yung bahay mo ay may nakaabang na posibleng mag landslide o kaya yung bahay mo ay kaunting ulan binabaha.”

(You can see right away what hazards are there in your sitio / village. You can easily see if there is a possibility of landslide or flooding near your your house.)

Areas which can be potential relocation sites can also be seen in the map.

“Yung kulay pula ang ibig sabihin nyan, yan yung pinakamatindi o pinakamalaki ang posibilidad na magkaroong ng landslide. Pagdating naman sa baha kulay violate siya. So, pag nakita mo yung bahay mo na nasa kulay violet, dapat ikaw ang mag-sangguni na sa lokal na pamahalaan.” Director Jasareno added.

(Red means the possibility of landslide is at its highest. During severe flooding, the code is violet. So when you see your house inside the violet zone, you have to immediately notify the local government)

The MGB will be uploading the geohazard map on its geoportal within the month, starting with the 171 municipalities that endured the worst of typhoon Yolanda in 2013.

The bureau has already distributed copies of the map to the LGUs.

The MGB is also set to launch its newest application for smartphone users in the coming days. (REY PELAYO / UNTV News)
