QUEZON CITY, Philippines — owners of the unlicensed firearms will be given another chance to be accommodated for registration as the Philippine National Police reopens its gun amnesty program worldwide in the third quarter of this year.
At present, the guidelines are being set for finalization and approval of the office of the PNP chief.
Based on the records of the PNP-Firearms and Explosives Office (PNP-FEO), there are almost 1.7 million registered firearms.
However, not everyone has provided updated information or some may already have an expired license.
On the other hand, more than 500 thousand loose firearms have been identified all over the country.
“Our thrust now is to have this final general amnesty this third quarter to address this issue of so many firearms now which have expired licenses,” said FEO PS/Supt. Sydney Hernia
Meanwhile, the Oplan Katok of the PNP is unceasing in its operation of accounting gun owners who have not yet renewed their licenses.
Hernia added that the license renewal processes will not be difficult. Nowadays since 3 satellite offices of the Firearms and Explosives Office have been opened to accommodate applications for license to own and possess firearms or LTOPF.
These satellites are located in Davao, Cebu and Marikina. While another one is expected to be opened in La Union.
The FEO has also confirmed that with the supplemental options being implemented by the PNP, firearms sale have increased from January until July this year.
A total of 26,588 firearms have been sold within 7 months compared with 26,732 in the whole year of 2014.
FEO also encourages gun owners to visit their office and apply for LTOPF should they encounter problems with their current license so that it can be settled through their revocation and restoration board. (UNTV News)
