Water allocation in Metro Manila may have increased but water concessionaires are still implementing water pressure reduction to their customers.

MANILA, Philippines — There is a recent increase of two cubic meter per second in water allocation in Metro Manila.

This would also increase pressure in water supply among the customers of Manila Water and Maynilad.

At present, Angat Dam’s water level has reached to 203 meters, still below the normal level of 210 meters.

The National Water Resources Board (NWRB) has increased water allocation in preparation for the upcoming Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit in November.

Despite this, water concessionaires will continue with the implementation of water management plan among their customers.

Manila Water will push through with reducing water pressure among its customer as a way to conserve the supply coming from NWRB.

Maynilad will begin implementing water pressure reduction starting Saturday.

Maynilad will also comply with its water interruption plan should water level in Angat Dam remain below normal in November. The interruption will be 12 to 20 hours and will surely affect about 900 barangays.

“After one month titingnan namin depende dun sa magiging actual situation sa pag-ulan sa Ipo at Angat water sheds. Kung hindi ganun karami … mag de-decide po kami kung ibabalik ang water interruption,” said Ronald Padua, head of water supply operations at Maynilad.

(After one month, we will be observing actual situation of rainfall in Ipo and Angat water sheds. If the level remains below normal, we will decide on whether to restore water interruptions.)

The NWRB has allotted a standby allocation of 10 cms to irrigations.

However the National Irrigation Administration said, they won’t be needing this for now since rice fields in Bulacan, Pampanga, Pangisinan, Isabela and Nueva Ecija are still submerged in flood water.

Another cyclone is expected to enter the country, according to PAGASA which may further increase water level in Angat Dam.

Senior weather specialist Anthony Lucero said, threat of a tropical cyclone is still there even with the strongest el niño as we are experiencing right now. “Despite very dry conditions…there are still extreme events like tropical cyclone Lando.” he said. (UNTV News)
