In a do-or-die game that would have determined if DOJ Justice Boosters will move to the next round, the already eliminated GSIS Furies played like they wanted to win more; managing to eke out a scintillating 63-60 victory and bringing down DOJ with them for an early vacation.

Job order personnel Rene Boy Banzali, converted on a game winner buzzer beating triple as the crowd went wild Sunday night in the second to the last playing date of UNTV Cup’s first round eliminations at Ynares Sports Arena.

UNTV Cup, the Public Service Channel’s basketball league where cash prizes are donated to charities is led by multi-awarded broadcaster and Mr. Public Service Daniel Razon.

The game was about to go to the overtime when Justice Boosters Ludovico Tolentino made a game tying triple with 5.8 seconds left. But the Furies led by coach Ronjay Enrile, needing only a two to win, designed for a long distance shot for Banzali which astonishingly went in, beating the final buzzer.

GSIS concluded the 4th season campaign with two wins against three losses while DOJ ended with only a win in five outings; not enough for both teams to advance to the second round. Before the game, Justice Boosters had a chance to qualify for the next round had they beaten the Furies and if Senate loses to PNP next week.

But GSIS, with no pressure to win, was carried by center Romer Diaz, point guard Dennis Bunyi and Banzali, with his end game heroics, to an inspiring victory that gave the Senate Defenders a free ride to the next round.

Defenders, even if they lose against PNP, will have an identical 2-3 slate with GSIS but the Kenneth Duremdes coached team still advance because of the winner over the other rule.

Staff officer Diaz had a consistent game of 15 points, nine rebounds and five blocks while staff assistant Bunyi and Banzali scored nine of their combined 15 markers in the final period. GSIS looks promising in the next season, with Enrile hinting that he would act as the playing coach.

DOJ was carried by Jorel Cañizares 18 points and four steals as the Justice Boosters once again failed to advance to the next round.

The CUP scores

GSIS 63 — Diaz 15, Tamayo 11, Bunyi 8, Banzali 7, Garcia 6, Blanco 6, Hernandez 5, Beran 5
