QUEZON CITY, Philippines — Three officials from the Department of Social Welfare and Development might be suspended or dismissed, if they are found guilty of negligence that resulted in spoiled goods found in a Tacloban warehouse.

According to DSWD Secretary Dinky Soliman, they are planning to finish the investigation and have their decision on this issue before the year ends.

On the program Get It Straight with Daniel Razon, Secretary Soliman stated that these officials were already relieved from the warehouse responsibility because of their negligence.

“Currently the investigation is still on-going. Before the year ends, we want to finish this and have our recommendation on whether they will be dismissed or suspended. Because it is our responsibility to ensure that the goods in the warehouse are properly stored. We also have a protocol that we must know the expiration date; its arrival and schedule of release − there is a procedure that was not followed, “ said Soliman in Filipino.

The Secretary also added that it is the responsibility of the agency to ensure that all relief items must be disposed before it expires. Goods that are near expiry are allocated to the agency’s other facilities such as orphanages.

Two hundred rotten food packs were buried in Dagami, Leyte last November 26. The packs contained rice, milk, coffee and canned goods.

These relief items were supposed to have been distributed to victims of typhoon Ruby in Eastern Visayas in 2014.

In line with this, the department re-assured that they are doing all efforts to improve their repacking system through mechanized food repacking.

This guarantees that relief goods distributed during calamities will always be in good condition. (JOAN NANO / UNTV News)
