MUNTINLUPA CITY, Philippines — A variety of illegal items were seized inside the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) during the Oplan Galugad raid conducted by the Bureau of Corrections .
Inmates from quadrants 2 and 3 were ordered out of their quarters before operatives searched their prison cells. Unlike previous operations, there were no deadly weapons recovered.
The Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) is currently investigating five personnel suspected of being involved in the smuggling of illegal items into the NBP. The result of the investigation will be released anytime soon.
Meanwhile, New Bilibid Prison Superintendent Richard Schwarzkopf Jr.announced that the Implementing Rules and Regulations (IRR) of Republic Act No. 1075 or the BuCor Modernization Law, is now complete. They are just finalizing the documents required by the Department of Budget and Management or DBM before submitting it for President Aquino’s signature.
The BuCor Modernization Law will help a lot in improving the service and system inside the NBP, such as putting up scanners and X-Ray machines at the entrance of the institution to monitor all people coming in and out of the facility.
Supt. Schwarzkopf also believes that the compensation increase prescribed in the IRR will boost morale among personnel.
The agency is hoping for the full implementation of RA 1075 before the end of the Aquino administration.
As for now, BuCor will be conducting regular Oplan Galugad operations which has accomplished about 50% of its target. (BENEDICT GALAZAN / UNTV News)
