QUEZON CITY, Philippines — On the TV program Get It Straight with Daniel Razon on Tuesday, Secretary Mel Senen Sarmiento of the Department of Interior and Local Government had stated their plans for the coming years.
Sarmiento said, they have already set their strategic plan, particularly for the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP); the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP).
The strategic plan for each organization shall be abided and continued by its next leader. The aim is to achieve the ASEAN standard for agencies under the DILG.
“Pinapakuha natin sila ng mga taong pwedeng magproseso para magawa ang isang plano na hindi nakabase kung sino ang namumuno. Ang labanan na ngayon, anong klaseng leader 60 KPH leader o 100 KPH leader,” said the secretary.
(We are asking them to get people who can process the realization of the plan which is not based on whoever the current leader is. The competition now is all about the type of leader: A 60 KPH leader or a 100 KPH leader?)
The secretary also said that the DILG should continue to prioritize the local government unit especially the infrastructure, re-settlement and housing projects in their respective areas.
(There are certain projects which we can pass on to the local government unit, however, someone must be there to implement it; and our LGU’s have to learn. Small projects can be assigned to them while the DPWH focuses on bigger projects.)
Patrol cars and communication equipment were first to be distributed among the ranks of PNP.
Next in line are the improvement of their laboratory, augmentation of weapons and the putting up of police stations in each town.
As for the Bureau of Fire, the DILG aims to obtain fire stations, fire trucks and additional manpower among towns this year.
Similarly, the DILG is now focused on the National Police Commission (NAPOLCOM) in providing the local and municipal mayors with the right to supervise the local PNP in their respective areas.
The DILG appeals to the public to report any city mayor found guilty of abusing such authority.
Meanwhile, as part of their modernization efforts, the DILG is set to release a mobile application that allows PNP to warn the public of areas with high incidence of recorded crime. (GRACE CASIN / UNTV News)
