QUEZON CITY, Philippines — Since the Office of the Ombudsman filed the civil forfeiture case against former Chief Justice Renato Corona in 2014, the court has only garnished less than one percent of the alleged illegal wealth of former magistrate.
In the latest report of the sheriff’s office, only five thousand pesos was frozen from his account in Landbank Supreme Court extension office.
Adding in the ten thousand pesos earlier garnished in January, only 15 thousand pesos from 130 million pesos was secured in garnishment by the court.
The court has ordered these assets and wealth to be frozen as these were computed to be the amount of illegal wealth that was garnered by Corona during his term as a public servant.
This also included his unexplained wealth when he was the Chief justice of the Supreme Court.
The garnished properties will serve as collateral for the government in case the latter finds Corona guilty of the charges.
Aside from the civil forfeiture case, Corona is also facing perjury before the 3rd division for his alleged misdeclaration in his SALN (Statement of Assets, Liabilities, and Net Worth) from 2001 until 2011.
His is also charged with tax evasion charges at Court of Tax Appeals.
Corona was impeached in 2013 due to his unexplained and undeclared wealth. (JOYCE BALANCIO / UNTV News)
