Defective generator set battery that caused power outage at NAIA Terminal 3 last Saturday.

Defective generator set batteries were the cause of brownout at NAIA last Saturday.

To prevent recurrence of the incident, the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) has allowed Meralco access to some of the airport facilities.

Ten generator sets of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3 have been replaced with new sets of batteries.

This is after MIAA discovered that the brownout last Saturday was due to the gensets’ defective batteries.

Nine of the 10 gensets functioned properly last Saturday. However, the battery of genset 2, that supplies electricity to most of the vital facilities at the airport, failed.

Among the affected areas were the entrance of the departure hall; screening equipment at the entrance; baggage handling system; check in lobby and the immigration counters.

The MIAA claimed full responsibility and cleared Meralco from any liability.

The MIAA also extends its apologies to the affected passengers.

Though it was still possible for some flights to carry on, the airline companies preferred to cancel flights so as not to affect their schedule for the following day.

For precautionary reasons, Meralco and MIAA made an agreement to address the problem.

Meralco has no jurisdiction over the facilities of MIAA but the latter allowed Meralco to check their gensets and power lines to ensure that they are working well.

Meralco will place a smart switcher at NAIA Terminal 3 for immediate response in case such problem recurs.

Meralco is confident that the incident will not happen again with the help of a smart switcher.

Meralco will release its report on the state of the gensets and the power supply in Terminal 3 after they have completed their inspection.
