A group of school service operators has been appealing to the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) to extend the deadline for the phase out of old school bus.

Based on the original plan, all school transport services that are more than 15 years old can only operate until March 31, 2016.

But according to LTFRB board member Atty. Ariel Inton, they will still discuss whether to give another extension for the owners and operators of school transport services since they have already promised last year that they will follow the policy.

“The Board will still discuss that. We haven’t changed the policy. The extension is up to just there. For all you know, the extension has been long given. The extension has been given for several times already,” Inton explained.

The school service operators still request that they should still be given some time since not all of them have purchased new units yet.

“Here in Metro Manila, there are 10,000 school service units which are traveling. As of now, there are only 20% of those have been changed to new units,” said National School Service Association President Celso De Paz in a phone interview.

On LTFRB’s list in Metro Manila, there are more than six thousand registered school services and almost two thousand of which are more than 15 years old and need to be replaced with new school service units.

One of the primary things which LTFRB considers is the condition and safety of the school children who will be fetched and be delivered daily once the opening of classes starts.
