Liberal Party (LP) leader in the Lower House gives freedom to its members to vote for their house speaker of choice.
During the meeting of the Liberal Party earlier, House Majority Floor Leader Neptali Gonzales II says they are free to support other party candidates but they need to remain under LP.
This comes after some members of the Liberal Party have openly signified support to PDP-Laban Sec. General Cong. Pantaleon ‘Bebot’ Alvarez in his bid for the house speakership.
“That’s what he asked for. That those members who will ally with the majority would remain as member of LP,” Rep. Gonzales said.
No less than House Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr. has indicated his support to Alvarez.
He said he accepts the possibility of him taking the position of a minority leader.
“He [belmonte] said he has already committed to Alvarez to support his speakership bid,” Rep. Gonzales added.
Today, the National Unity Party and Lakas-CMD have given their support to PDP-Laban.
It can be recalled that among the first parties to join the PDP were Lakas, Nationalist Peoples Coalition, Nacionalista Party and Parylist Coalition.
Alvarez has mentioned that there are talks between PDP-Laban and the Makabayan Bloc as well as the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA).
For this reason, Alvarez has sure votes to win the speakership.
