KUWAIT — Highly skilled Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) have high expectations from the new administration of President Rodrigo Duterte.

Such as the electrical engineers in Kuwait who hope for better opportunities in the Philippines so they could come home and be with their respective families.

A lot of them have been abroad for years and they are compelled to stay because their salary in the Philippines is not enough for their daily needs.

“OFWs here are in deep sacrifice. Those in the Philippines believe that OFWs earn a lot abroad. But no. We just can’t find work there so we prefer to stay,” Engr. Joel P. Paliangayan said.

Despite having a degree, OFWs struggle to hold on to their jobs having only 12 years education which deprives them of appropriate promotions and salary increases.

“Our educational system is behind the international standard. The K to 12 has just started this year in the country, but it is being implemented in other countries ever since. The government should push for it,” Engr. Eric Dicolen added.

Regular seminars are being conducted to electrical engineers in the Middle East to prepare them in passing the licensure exam for Filipino professionals abroad.
