CAMP AGUINALDO, Quezon City – The administration of President-elect Rodrigo Duterte is expected to maintain security and peace in the West Philippine Sea by implementing the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement or EDCA.
This is according to the non-government sectors of the Philippines, Japan, the United States of America and Australia.
The Center for Maritime Transparency Initiative commended outgoing President Benigno Aquino III for asserting the rights of the Philippines over its territories through peaceful resolutions.
Thus, the Philippines gained the support of many countries particularly the association of Southeast Asian Nations or ASEAN.
These non-government representatives are confident that the upcoming administration of President-elect Rodrigo Duterte will continue the policies of the outgoing administration particularly the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement.
The significance of Duterte’s implementation of EDCA and its impact on the Asia Pacific Region, was discussed at a forum conducted by an international and strategic research organization.
For former Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario, bilateral negotiations of the Philippines with China can be pushed through after the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague releases its decision.
National Defense officials under the current administration say EDCA is not only a deterrent against China’s aggression over the West Philippine or South China Sea, it is also an instrument to intensify humanitarian assistance, disaster response and modernization in the Armed Forces of the Philippines.
