ORMOC CITY, Philippines — The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) is bolstering its support to members of the Pantawid Pamilya Pilipino Program (4Ps) in Eastern Visayas by subsidizing the college education of their children.
Under the Expanded Student Grant in Aid Program for Poverty Alleviation, more than 2,000 students will be given a chance to enroll this year at any of the 10 state universities selected by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) for the program.
According to DSWD Regional Director Resty Macuto, applicants don’t necessarily have to be exceptionally intelligent to receive a grant. They just need to have passing grades and the determination to finish college.
Background checks shall be required prior to validation of applicants. A shortlist of qualified students will be given to CHED.
Each ESGP-PA grantee will receive Php 30,000 for the whole year.
DSWD will be strictly monitoring recipients of the program since there are grantees that claim the cash but do not report to class.
Meanwhile, DSWD has gathered the first 100 graduates of the ESGP-PA program in Ormoc City to serve as an inspiration to new recruits this school year.
The department has also sought assistance from the Department of Labor and Employment and other government agencies, to find job placements for the program’s graduates.
Macuto said, government should continue to support these marginalized families until they achieve an improved standard of living.
