Imperturbable. Five among the 200 OFWs from the company of Mohammad Al Mojil Group or MMG that were stranded in Saudi Arabia due to Saudization Policy have finally returned home.
The 5 OFWs were Rodrigo Santiago from Sta. Maria Bulacan, Rolando Palao from North Fairview Quezon City, Arturo Layson and Oscar Peñaflor are from Limay Bataan, while Manolito Toston is from Talugtug, Nueva Ecija.
Arturo Lasyon, one of the 5 OFWs from Saudi Arabia, shared how hard it was for people like him to stay for vacation from May 2013 and haven’t even returned home yet.
“I worked there for likely more than a year but I was also stocked out of work there for a year and a half until I had a heart disease,” he added.
On the other side, Senator Cynthia Villar said that the Saudization Policy gave a huge impact to thousands of Filipino workers, especially to those working in Saudi Arabia.
Under Saudization Policy, the greater prioritization to employees is given by the companies to their countrymen than to those who came from other countries.
“We received letters from the families of the OFWs asking to help them go home, so I am suggesting the others who also want to go home, to do the same thing. While we will be doing follow-ups with the Department of Foreign Affairs and DOLE to process their repatriation,” Senator Villar added.
Meanwhile, according to Ms. Susan ‘Toots’ Ople, the president of Ople Center, their petition to the embassy is to hopefully ensure that the OFWs and the families have a good result to expect for, since everyone in Saudi knows that in MMG, it [the process probably] will be quite difficult for them financially.
Apart from this, the 5 OFWs were granted with livelihood assistance to help them start their small business.
However, as soon as the 17th Congress finally commences, Senator Villar hopes to push through again with the establishment of the Department of OFWs, besides it has already gained support from the incoming President Rodrigo Duterte.
