QUEZON CITY, Philippines — The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) is planning to intensify its campaign in defense of human rights under the incoming Duterte administration.
CHR chair Jose Luis Gascon has asserted that he will continue to do his job despite the threat of being sacked once the new administration takes over.
He adds that he will intensify the programs of the commission and further expand public knowledge on issues of human rights.
“We are acting as referee. Our job is to call out those who cross the line or foul. So, please do not take it against the referee,” Gascon said.
CHR appeals to the Duterte administration to draft programs that would minimize the cases of human rights abuse and continuously promote the fight against human rights violations.
“If the culture of violence will progress, our goal of law and order might turn into lawlessness and fear,” Gascon added. “I hope they would craft programs that would protect the human rights of the people, not those that will add to the cases of human rights abuse.”
