U.S. military operation in West Philippine Sea will continue even if China pushes for the establishment an Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) in the disputed territory.
The issue of China’s plan to install an Air Defense Identification Zone in South China Sea has resurfaced.
Under ADIZ, aircrafts should seek permission first from China before they can use the airspace above the disputed territory.
Despite this, America’s Pacific Command Air Force has said it would not stop its operation over South China Sea.
“The designation of an Air Defense Identification Zone won’t have impact upon our operations. Much like it did when they unilaterally declared one in other parts of the region. We will continue to operate where we are legally allowed to operate,” said MGen. Michael Compton, air national guard assistant commander.
In April, the U.S. toured over Scarborough shoal which irked China. According to Compton, it’s one way to show China that America has the right to operate over the said territory.
Meanwhile, an official of Japan Self-defense Force believes that nations claiming the disputed territory must be vigilant especially since China is not stopping its activities in South China Sea.
“Since they are continuing their unilateral attempt to change status quo by coercion based on assertion, we needed to keep an eye to its movement,” said Lt. Gen. Yoshinari Marumo.
