QUEZON CITY, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) reports a total of 4,661 individuals who violated the election gun ban this year. The figure is higher in comparison with that of 2013 that only has 3,724.
PNP PIO Chief P/CSupt. Wilben Mayor said, within the 150 days that the gun ban was effective, most of the offenders were civilians with 4,460 compared with 3,437 in 2013.
Only a few soldiers, government officials and police officers have been apprehended. Only 36 police have been charged this year as compared with 50 in 2013.
However, the number of firearms, deadly weapons, and ammunition this year is lower compared to the figure in 2013.
“We are not satisfied because there were still police offenders despite our campaign and information. What they did was violation of the law. Of course, our target is still zero,” Mayor said.
Despite this, Mayor said the election was orderly and peaceful this year.
Meanwhile, the police security protection group has issued a recall order to 800 police personnel who served as security details to election candidates, government leaders and private individuals.
PSPG Director P/CSupt. Alfred Corpus said, the recalled personnel would be assigned to incumbent politicians who would request police details.
Likewise, protectees are reminded not to treat the police as their personal errand boys by making them carry bags and groceries.
Corpus adds that they are imposing stricter policy on requesting security details saying only those with serious threats will be considered, such as victims of heinous crimes or of kidnap for ransom incidents.
Corpus said, the PNP Chief wants to limit the number of allowable police details to private individuals to utilize the rest of the police in ground patrolling.
