MUNTINLUPA CITY, Philippines — Pedro E. Diaz High School in Muntinlupa City was among the schools identified by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) that is transected by West Valley Fault.
Three buildings in the said school are not being used by the students to prevent any accident that might happen in the event of a strong earthquake.
One of those buildings is currently being demolished while the two others have already been abandoned.
This is the reason why the school failed to implement senior high this year.
“The school area doesn’t have any provision for expansion. That’s the problem with that so kung ano lang yung available spaces, that’s only the spaces we can make us of,” PEDHS guidance councilor Sueanne Yago said.
Because of this, thousands of Grade 10 completers of the said school were forced to transfer to other nearby schools.
“We give them seminars as to what to do because they really have to transfer. By then, we try to find out kung saan silang tracks around the schools which other schools can accommodate them. Majority of them went to private sector,” Yago added.
Currently, the school have more than 5,000 enrollees for junior high this year.
Each classroom consists of 55-56 students.
And to accommodate all students who enrolled in Pedro E. Diaz High School, management has decided to utilize their covered court to put up more classrooms set to finish next week.
Construction on two of their buildings is still on going to add more storeys for other classrooms.
This is also in preparation for the possible implementation of senior high in the coming years.
The school management hopes that when construction of additional classrooms is completed, their students will no longer need to transfer schools.
