QUEZON CITY, Philippines — The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has announced a deadline for provincial and city bus units following approval from the Quezon City Regional Trial Court of the mandatory installation of global positioning system (GPS) in their units.
The deadline supposed to have ended in May 31 but because of the temporary restraining order issued by QCRTC in April, the agency has extended the deadline for provincial buses until June 30.
Meanwhile, city bus operators have until September to install the device in their vehicles.
Failure to comply with the deadline of installing the GPS device would incur P1,000 fine for each unit.
Juliet De Jesus has 84 bus units and if she fails to meet the deadline, she might pay a total of P84,000 each month. Thus, she is saving money for the purchase of the GPS devices.
“[I am preparing for] the least price that could qualify with the requirements of the LTFRB. Of course, we will buy the devices from accredited suppliers,” De Jesus said.
De Jesus assures that they will not pass off to commuters the cost of installing the devices.
For its part, the agency says the GPS will help minimize road accidents because the LTFRB can now monitor bus routes and the movement of buses through a server.
Once the installation of GPS on buses is complete, the agency will soon require installation on jeepneys, taxi cabs and UV express.
