QUEZON CITY, Philippines — Incoming police chief Ronald Dela Rosa believes that the ongoing peace process between the government and the New People’s Army (NPA) will be a success.

According to Dela Rosa, continuing peace negotiations is a good move in ending conflict.

“They are also Filipinos who belong to the poverty line and have specific issues. So, if we sit down and talk about it, then it’s better. We are all Filipinos so let’s talk. Let’s not fight,” Dela Rosa explained.

Nevertheless, if the NPA members refuse to listen to their leaders and continue to fire arms against the government, it leaves him no choice but to stand for his men especially for those who are in police stations that are being attacked by the rebels.

“If they will not adhere with [their leaders,] we have no choice but to continue the fight; continue to defend our police stations,” he added.

Dela Rosa reminds his men to be more vigilant and pro-active in order to prevent rebel attacks while the peace process is on-going.

“We cannot be relaxed just because the peace process in on-going. There might be some who would refuse to listen, who might overrun the police stations. Who would be to blame? No one but us.”
