More than 900 students including teachers in Valeriano E. Fugoso Memorial School in Marikina City joined the pre-earthquake drill held earlier today led by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA).
This is part of the agency’s preparation for the second Metro Wide Shake Drill to be held on Wednesday, June 22.
As the sirens went off to signal the start of the drill, the teachers and students did the Dock, Cover and Hold position, before proceeding to the school open grounds that serves as their evacuation area.
They also joined the popular MMDA Dance showing what to do in case of an earthquake.
“We are preparing all sector of our society. Among these are our students. Although, we know that they are very used to shake drill. But we need to remind them the Dock, Cover and Hold as well as the evacuation,” said MMDA chair Atty. Emerson Carlos.
“After what had happened in Bohol, we also have to prepare in case this happens here in Metro Manila. Even if it is unannouced, when they hear the siren, they know that it is a sign that an earthquake is happening. And they know what they need to do and where to go,” principal Minerva Rosco said.
Aside from schools, other government agencies and private offices are expected to participate on Wednesday.
Operators of big shopping malls will also join the earthquake drill to avoid a stampede in case of a strong earthquake.
The second metro-wide earthquake drill will be led by the MMDA in cooperation with the local government units and even those who are in barangay level.
This is to encourage even the residents across Metro Manila to participate in the drill.
MMDA will divide the NCR into 4 sectors to easily conduct evacuation of the victims during the earthquake.
Among these are Villamor Airbase in Pasay as south sector, Intramuros in Manila for west sector, VMMC golf course in Quezon City for north sector and LRT-2 Santolan station grounds for east sector.
Although this is considered as metro-wide earthquake drill, this time provinces such as Rizal, Bulacan, Laguna and Cavite will be participating because these places are also transected by the West Valley Fault.
