Starting next week, all impounded vehicles will be sent to Tarlac City by the Department of Transportation (DOTr).
DOTr says they want to teach violators a lesson so they will not commit the same mistake again.
“They said it’s an inconvenience for violators. But those violators are the inconvenience to more people. Why give consideration of inconvenience to violators? We will take care of their vehicles” Transportation secretary Arthur Tugade said.
A hectare lot owned by the Land Transportation Office (LTO) will be used as the new impounding area.
Sec. Tugade wants the impounding area prepared in seven days.
The transportation department also wants to raise the penalty because transporting the vehicles to Tarlac will be costly.
“When it comes to discipline, sometimes it hurts. Discipline sometimes harms. You must feel the pain so it will be progressive.”
The transportation department will give consideration if a violator can settle the penalty right away so that there is no need for his vehicle to be impounded.
DOTr explains that this will not yet be implemented for vehicles apprehended by the MMDA but the department is now negotiating with the MMDA for its future implementation.
Currently, impounded vehicles pile up at the LTO. Many of these have already been abandoned by the owners. With the new rules, all apprehended vehicles like colorum will be impounded in Tarlac.
Some motorists are in favor of the plan of the department.
“That will be good so that they will learn. Colorum vehicle owners must make a way,” said driver Ernesto Soriano.
“I agree so that they will be swayed. There’s so many colorum vehicles today,” driver Bryan Marmol said.
This is just one of the steps that the Department of Transportation is doing to resolve the traffic problem in Metro Manila.
