The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) is strengthening the country’s aquaculture system to contribute to the government’s food security target.
BFAR-Region 4A Director Lilian Garcia said aquaculture can be a source of fish and other seafood particularly since coastal fishing in the country is facing various challenges.
At present, BFAR is conducting free training in aquaculture and distributing fingerlings such as tilapia, milkfish and shrimp to fishermen who want to venture in fish farming.
For her part, Sen. Cynthia Villar says, there is a need to focus on the country’s sustainable aquaculture development to strengthen the fish farming industry.
Farmers should also be trained in modern fishing technology in order to improve the country’s food production
“Aquaculture is very important in the Philippines. Twenty years ago, 70% of our fish production came from the ocean, 30% from aqua. Now it is 50-50,” added Villar.
Meanwhile, BFAR is also encouraging fishermen to register so they can avail of the benefits from government programs. (SHERWIN CULUBONG/UNTV News& Rescue)
