“I will use the military and the police. Wipe them out. If they present a violent resistance, wipe them out.”

It is clear that one of President Rodrigo Duterte’s main agenda is to suppress crime and the proliferation of illegal drugs.

Also the President promised to fight corruption, end contractualization, resolve the traffic problem and implement tax reform.

He also stated that the salary of the military and police will be raised.

A recent Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey shows that six out of ten Filipinos are optimistic that the President can make good on his promises.

The 1,200 respondents were asked how many of the President’s promises do they think will be fulfilled.

1% said almost none or none, 32% answered only a few while 63% percent believes he can fulfill all, nearly all or most of his promises.

“Of those who answered all or most of the promises will be fulfilled, 75% are from Mindanao although the other areas of the country showed a high percentage also.” said Director for Data Processing and Sampling Jay Sandoval.

SWS clarified that in the course of asking the respondents, Duterte’s promises were not mentioned because the survey only wishes to guage the people’s optimism towards the new president.

“This means that the public has high hopes to the current administration but on the other hand there is a great demand for the administration to deliver its promises,” Sandoval said.

Meanwhile, for Obet Cruz, a kalesa driver, the President’s promise to fight crime and illegal drugs is already bearing fruits.

“His ways and strategies are good. Drug addicts are neutralized or arrested. A lot has changed,” Cruz said.

However, some people still have requests to the President.

“I ask him that the poor be given a means to start their own livelihood so they will not be on the streets,” said UV express driver Edwin Detablan.
