NUEVA ECIJA — President Rodrigo Duterte visited yesterday the soldiers of Fort Ramon Magsaysay in Palayan City, Nueva Ecija.
During the event, the president explained his decision to declare unilateral ceasefire with leftist rebels.
“I am a president that seeks peace with everyone. Ang trabaho ko pagka-presidente ay hindi maghanap ng away. “
(I am a president that seeks peace with everyone. My job as a president is not to seek conflict.)
In relation to this, President Duterte ordered the preparation of safe conduct passage for exiled militant leaders.
This is to resume the formal peace talks between the government and rebel groups.
“ I have to start with releasing the leaders. Not release or anything but safe conduct pass for (Jose Maria) Sison, (Nur) Misuari. Si Murad (Ebrahim), walang kaso. At sabay sabay na lang ang usapan natin towards the end of the year,” said Duterte.
(I have to start with releasing the leaders. Not release or anything but safe conduct pass for (Jose Maria) Sison, (Nur) Misuari. With regards to Murad (Ebrahim), there’s no problem. We’ll conduct the talks together towards the end of the year.)
However, the president noted that the Moro Islamic Liberation Front and Moro National Liberation Front should first cut ties with the bandit group Abu Sayaff.
“Yung armas ng Abu Sayaff, yan yung armas nila noon. Kung ayaw nilang bitawan o nakakonekta pa rin sila sa Abu Sayaff, I do not think there will be a significant result. “
(The arms of the Abu Sayaff were their [MILF/MNLF] arms before. If they [MILF/MNLF) refuse to cut ties with Abu Sayaff, I do not think there will be a significant result.)
Duterte also announce that additional forces will be added to the military as well as the implementation of incremental increase in the soldiers’ salary starting next month.
According to Sgt. Napoleon Sevilla of the SOCOM – Technical Sergeant Special Forces Regiment
Airborne, “It is a big boost to our morale. He [Pres. Duterte] even said he will take care of us as long as we do our job…the whole armed forces will support.” (UNTV News & Rescue)
